Description of Project :
The existing building was a steel framed three storied structure with reinforced concrete floor slabs. The insufficient concrete depth for fire resistance, inadequate concrete cover to reinforcement, full depth of carbonation, corrosion of structural steel members and insufficient lateral wind bracings for the roof were the main concern in structural renovation of the Mini- pavilion. In order to keep concrete cover and fire requirements in accordance with the current British Codes. Slab thickness had to increase.
Consequently the structural capacities of existing steel beams, columns etc. Had tobeimproved to cater for the additional dead loads. All the deteriorated floor/tied seating slabs were removed and replaced with new reinforced slabs. Existing structural steel beams were re-designed as composite concrete steel beams and were able to gain necessary flexural capacities to carry additional dead loads. Compression capacities and fire resistance of existing steel columns were also improved by having reinforced concrete encasement. Additional wind bracings were lacking in the roof trusses and rectifications were done with mild steel round bars.
