Description of Project :
The project comprised construction of a 122m high double
curvature mass concrete arch dam with a crest length of
520 m, gated spill ways, bottom outlets and stilling basin.
The power tunnel and intake is 5.7 km long and 6.2m in
diameter. The Power Station included a switch yard and
substation and had an initial capacity of 3x70 MW with
provision for 3 further 70 MW machines as stage 2.
Description of Services Provided:
The main consultancy services for the head works of the project were provided by internationally reputed
foreign consultancy firms which were selected by the donor country. CECB played the role of local
counterpart to these consultancy firms. Technical staff of CECB assisted in the planning, investigation and
design and construction supervision works. The CECB was solely responsible for the project management
and design and supervision of the peripheral works of the project which included relocation of roads, towns
and villages and provision of infrastructure services. CECB also advised and assisted the Client, the
Mahaweli Authority of Sri Lanka in the management of the projects.
